St. Patrick’s Day Family Fun

St. Patrick ’s Day seems to become a bigger holiday every year. I remember as I kid, all we did was wear green to school and pinch everyone who forgot. Now, we have green rivers, food, and lots of decorations. To help you have a fun day celebrating with your kids, here’s a quick roundup of the history of this holiday and some craft ideas.
Where did this holiday come from?
The quick version is that it is a Catholic holiday celebrating the Saint of Ireland. There have been many exaggerated stories about his life. The first ever parade was held in New York City by Irish immigrants. As the Irish population in US cities continued to grow, so did this tradition. The first dyed green river (Chicago) appeared in 1962.
For more historical tidbits, visit the History Channel’s website. You’ll find quizzes to test your irishness, more history tales, fables, recipes and even a list of famous Irish people.
While it is really interesting to study the historical figure at the center of this holiday, I think it is more interesting how our culture has created this event that is tied to so many traditions that had nothing to do with Patrick himself. So while the authentic Catholic celebration of St. Patrick has nothing to do with leprechaun’s & pots of gold; for the general public, this holiday has evolved into a celebration of all things Irish which includes lots of interesting folklore & traditions.
