  • Got somethin to say? Got something interesting to say? On Halloween and Christmas I include some church brochures in with the gifts and treats.During election time I throw in some candidate flyers too...just to give the parents some reading material when they are seeking out their favorite candy in their child's bag. • Jack-O-Lanterns As part of our monthly learning projects for recycling, we make Jack-O-Lanterns with empty milk cartons. All you need is a clean empty gallon milk carton (keep the lid) orange and black paint. Paint the carton orange, let dry, paint a face for the jack-o-lantern, let dry and paint the lid black. To keep it weighted down in our "patch" we just fill with water and plant them! Submitted By: Leanne(Added: 5-Oct-2000 Hits: 0 Rating: 9.00 Votes: 3) Rate It

  • Learning When you look for a toy for your kid, don't just buy him or her a toy, buy an educational toy from Leap Frog/ There are others that are educational as well as fun. I just bought my daughter a karoke that does the alphabet and numbers as well as a bunch of children songs and it has a window on top that shows the letters as well as the numbers. • Learning to count Ever since my kids could stand, whenever we go up the steps, we count out loud the number of each step as we go up. Since it's something we do everyday, perhaps several times a day, they've learned to count in no time! Submitted By: S. Oleski(Added: 16-Apr-2004 Hits: 0 Rating: 0 Votes: 0) Rate It

  • License Plates and Capitols Here's a fun way to teach your kids the state capitols. When you're on the road notice out of state license plates. The person that sees it says that state's name and taps another person until that person can name the capitol of that state. My kids have become better at it than me! (you could also use a point system, counting 1-2-3 until someone calls out the capitol.) Submitted By: Lyndie(Added: 6-Dec-2000 Hits: 0 Rating: 10.00 Votes: 2) Rate It

  • Making Nature an Adventure My daughters Madison (8) and Sara (3)love to watch the horses in the pasture below where we live. They love to watch the birds in the natural wetland close to the valley floor, and wondered why the birdies never came to visit us. We hung a suet cage and a sunflower bell outside the dining room doors, and they lay on the carpet, not moving, for at least an hour, with a bird book, ticking off the birds that they have come to know. Here's the tip for bird safety - hang a pretty crystal in the window - it makes pretty rainbows for the kids, and the birds see it and won't fly into the window! Now Madison wants binnoculars for Christmas so she can take them on hikes through the forest trails around our house. Who knew that looking at different types of fungus, mushrooms, moss and petroglyphs could be so fun! Don't forget to take paper and charcoal for rubbings! • Memory My 3-yr. old attends preschool. I recieve a report sheet at the end of the day from his teacher what he did that day (he ate/not ate, made a craft, napped etc.). When I pick him up and put him in the car on our way home, I start asking him questions about his day to see if he answers me correctly (I already know b/c of the sheet). His eyes light up when I am able to be a part of his day and discuss w/him about what he did. Submitted By: Amber Crosby(Added: 16-Nov-2002 Hits: 0 Rating: 0 Votes: 0) Rate It

  • Nevada or Ninevah? Our young son was playing with his GeoSafari. He had to locate Nevada in 99 seconds. However, his reading skills weren't quite perfected at the time. He yelled to the kitchen for help from his teen-age sister who was cooking dinner. He asked her to quickly tell him where Ninevah was because he only had a few seconds. She quickly taught him the difference between the two words! Submitted By: Susan Walker(Added: 4-May-2001 Hits: 0 Rating: 1.00 Votes: 1) Rate It

  • one on one Before my son started school, i made up index cards that contained items that he needed to learn for school or for his own personal knowledge, we would take these cards every where and practice, even if it was only one card per stop, it was like a pop quiz; this way i didn't bore him or wear him out. He really enjoyed the 'I'm imprtant time, even when it was going to do grown up things. Submitted By: JULIE JOHNSON(Added: 7-Jul-2004 Hits: 0 Rating: 0 Votes: 0) Rate It

  • Reading comprehension In elementary school, my son had difficulty learning spelling words. After I began taping each lesson on cassette, TC would put on headphones, open the lesson book, & study. His grades improved dramatically. My son TC is grown & a sophomore at East Carolina University, so I decided to act as a reading tutor. I work with a 3rd grader 2-3 times a week at Margaret Willis Elementary here in Fayetteville NC. I am using the audio tape cassette & headphones method to help him focus on reading & increase his comprehension. My student now tries on his own to sound out unfamiliar words & is excited to listen each week to his books! His teacher is delighted with his new attitude towards learning & I have benefitted from the interaction. Submitted By: janet martindale(Added: 2-Dec-2000 Hits: 0 Rating: 9.00 Votes: 3) Rate It

  • Save Those Milk Bottle Tops Plastic tops from milk bottles, or any kind of bottle, make great game pieces to use to teach your child how to count. Submitted By: MsJudy(Added: 22-Mar-2001 Hits: 0 Rating: 0 Votes: 0) Rate It

  • School box Buy extra school supplies in July and August when they are on sale. Purchase a plastic storage box with lid or use a shoe box. These supplies are for "at home use" only. When the children have homework projects to do, there's no more trying to find supplies at the last minute because they left their markers, crayons, rulers, glue stick, etc. at school! The rules are: 1)Use any supplies in the box. 2)Replace all the supplies back into the box. 3)Place the box back in the designated spot. 4)Inform Mom of any supplies that are running low. This has saved me many unexpected trips to WalMart!!! I started this when my 2 boys were in grade school. They are now in high school and it still works for us....just update the supplies (protractor, calculator, highlighters, etc.) Submitted By: Gloria B.(Added: 19-Mar-2006 Hits: 0 Rating: 0 Votes: 0) Rate It
