  • Beneficial Birthday Party Gifts In our school, a child traditionally donates a book to the library in honor of his or her birthday. We took this a little farther. My son had a party, invited all his classmates, and he asked each to bring a book to donate instead of a gift. The parents seemed to like this. No one had to worry about if he would like the gift or already had it, and any price was fine, too. He felt great in giving, because everyone can check-out the books and enjoy them. • Children With Autism If you are trying to educate children with autism at home as a way to supplement what they are being taught at school I have three tips.If they are very responsive to classical music. I highly recommend playing Mozart or Bach or Vivaldi while teaching them the same math problem three times a day for a week. Change the problem each week. That's the first tip. The second tip is to be calm and patient. Autistic kids learn best in calm environments. The third tip is to teach them reading and writing in a similiar pattern. I have found this to be very helpful as I am raising two autistic sons. Good Luck! Submitted By: Leah(Added: 19-Oct-2005 Hits: 0 Rating: 0 Votes: 0) Rate It

  • Children's Artwork My children do a lot of art work and there is never enough room. We tape up the ones that can be used as decorations for different holidays when they come around. We also encourage them to give them to grandparents and other family members so they can appreciate the great things that they worked so hard on. • Discipline When my children would misbehave or do something that wasn't right I would sit them down and assign an essay reflecting on it. Many were good plus it gave them experience in writing thoughts connected as we would discuss the essay afterwards. I didn't assign ridicuously long ones just short but gained their thoughts on others feelings and their knowledge grew both socially and academically Submitted By: Terry McGovern(Added: 27-Jul-2006 Hits: 0 Rating: 0 Votes: 0) Rate It

  • Encourage Summer Reading At the beginning of the summer I take the kids to a book store and buy them each a few books. The books have to be something that more than one person can read and be interested in. Then I pay a dollar for each book read during the summer. • Kids Helping Out I've discovered a great way to keep things neat and tidy in a kids rooms. I call it "the 5 minute tidy." Every morning, my kids have a 5-minute tidy where for 5 minutes they work on their room as quickly as they can. We repeat this for 5 minutes after school if needed and again right before bed. Just 15 minutes a day broken down into 5 minute increments isn't much at all and they can still accomplish making the bed, picking up, dusting, vacuuming, putting away laundry, and taking laundry to the laundry room. IT WORKS GREAT and its easy for everyone!! Submitted By: Vicky(Added: 15-May-2002 Hits: 0 Rating: 10.00 Votes: 2) Rate It

  • New Spin on Old Easter Egg Hunt Feeling your child is two old for an Easter Egg Hunt? When my daughters got two old to enjoy a hunt we added a new twist to it. We have it in the dark with flashlights. This started for them and has turned into an event that takes place the weekend after Easter(cost a lot less - all Easter stuff on clearance) and has about 40 kids. For the teens we have the really small eggs. Belive me this is not easy. We always find missed ones the next day. • organizing kids I hang each outfit for my children (age 4 and 7-boys) in his closet. I have done this since the first one was a baby. I am a working mom and this helps them get ready for school by themselves. I still have to button for the little one, but he gets his own clothes on! • Organizing School Clutter With two "schoolers" I've found that I just can't keep up with all of the papers they bring home that must be kept for one reason or another (ex: spelling word lists, permission slips to be returned, class lists, etc.). I've found the perfect solution to be a clipboard. As soon as backpacks are emptied each day the "keepers" are placed directly on the clipboard. The clipboard is kept in the same place so the kids know where to find it when they need something from the board. This has saved us alot of hassle and headaches! I think this year we may need two of them since each year the kids seem to get more and more papers they need to keep. Hope this tip helps you like it helped us. • Preventing Head Lice If you put about 10 to 15 drops of tea oil in any shampoo (I use a cheapie like Sauve) and have your kids wash their hair in this solution about three times a week it will prevent lice. My kids have not had lice since I started this. Give it a try. Submitted By: Michelle(Added: 15-Sep-2002 Hits: 0 Rating: 0 Votes: 0) Rate It
